Dancing Lizard Gardens is a wholesale nursery specializing in the production of hardy succulents. We currently produce named varieties of Sempervivum, Sedum and Jovibarba heuffelii, which are available in 3-1/2" pots. We also offer hard-to-find, value added product such as container gardens and living wreaths.
Hardy succulents are drought tolerant and easy to grow and propagate. Their variety in size, shape, color and texture is intriguing and give gardeners the opportunity to create an abundance of drama in a small space, whether it be in rock gardens, on garden walls, or in a container garden on the deck. All of our products are hardy to zone 4 unless otherwise noted. We grow our propagation stock in "mother" beds that are exposed to all local weather extremes to ensure their hardiness. For more information on plant hardiness zones, the United States National Arboretum Website offers a web version of the USDA plant hardiness zone map.

Sempervivum, commonly known as Hens & Chicks or Houseleek, are drought tolerant, hardy succulents that form rosettes and are suitable for landscaping in rock gardens or growing in container gardens. They flourish in many soil types as long as adequate drainage is provided. Sempervivums are available in numerous varieties with rosettes ranging in size from less than one-quarter inch to six inches in diameter. Chicks are produced as offsets on stolons of varying lengths. The chicks can be removed and set onto damp soil to root. Sempervivum are drought tolerant and can recover from very withered and dry states. What they cannot tolerate is continuously wet soil conditions during warm weather summer growing season and must have good drainage. Constantly wet roots encourage rot and are a guaranteed way to kill your Sempervivum and other hardy succulents. Give them the drainage that they need and they will thrive even in Oregon’s wet winters.
Jovibarba heuffelii while not as common as Sempervivum are also known as Hens & Chicks. Jovibarba heuffelii also form rosettes and are similar in appearance and drought tolerance to Sempervivum, but propagate differently. Rather than producing chicks as offsets, the new rosettes are directly attached to the main root crown and must be separated by using a knife. The cut surface of the plants must then be allowed to callus over before replanting to prevent rot. They have the same drainage requirements as Sempervivum.
Sedums, commonly known as Stonecrop, are available in an amazing variety of color, texture and forms. Domestic species are typically used as ground covers. Many are semi deciduous, leaving only terminal buds on the creeping stems in winter and some form year around carpets. Cultivated Sedums originate from all parts of the world, from mountains to deserts; therefore even hardy sedums vary considerably in their tolerance for moisture and sunlight. Sedums are propagated by dividing the roots or by placing cuttings in moist soil with protection from harsh sun. Blossoms range from bright yellow to many shades of pink, lavender and purple.
